Not all blemishes are created equal.
And treating them all the same is one of the biggest mistakes in skincare.
Most acne-prone skin isn’t “dirty.”
It’s overworked.
Over-exfoliated.
Over-corrected.
If we understand what type of blemish we’re dealing with, we stop attacking — and start supporting.
Let’s break it down properly.
1. Whiteheads (Closed Comedones)
What they look like:
- Small
- White or skin-coloured
- Not inflamed
Whiteheads form when oil and dead skin become trapped under the surface of the skin. The pore remains closed, so there’s no dark centre.

They’re usually caused by congestion and oil build-up — not poor hygiene.
What makes them worse:
- Over-stripping cleansers
- Aggressive scrubs
- Harsh spot treatments
When skin is stripped, it often produces more oil — which means more congestion.
What helps:
- Gentle cleansing
- Mild, consistent exfoliation (not daily scrubbing)
- Supporting the skin barrier so oil production can regulate itself
If you haven’t read it yet, I explain how different ingredients impact your skin in my guide to which skincare ingredients to avoid.
2. Blackheads (Open Comedones)
What they look like:
- Dark centre
- Flat or slightly raised
- Not inflamed
Blackheads are not dirt.

The dark colour is oxidised oil — when trapped oil is exposed to air, it darkens.
What makes them worse:
- Over-cleansing
- Alcohol-heavy toners
- Stripping products that trigger rebound oil production
What helps:
- Gentle cleansing that doesn’t disrupt lipids
- Supporting normal oil balance
- Patience
Your skin regulates itself far better when it isn’t constantly under attack.
3. Papules
What they look like:
- Red
- Tender
- No visible head
Papules are inflamed blemishes. There’s irritation and immune response involved, but no pus at the surface.

This is where many people make the mistake of “going harder.”
What makes them worse:
- Drying treatments
- Picking
- Layering multiple actives
When inflammation is the issue, the solution is calming — not punishment.
A barrier-supportive routine is essential here.
This is where I often recommend something simple and restorative like Clarity Whipped Tallow Balm to support lipid balance and calm stressed skin.
4. Pustules
What they look like:
- Red base
- White or yellow centre
- Inflamed
Pustules involve inflammation and bacterial activity.

But even here — over-drying can backfire.
Stripping the skin can weaken its protective barrier, making it harder for the skin to defend itself properly.
Gentle cleansing with something lipid-supportive like Meadowsoft Tallow Cleansing Balm helps cleanse without triggering rebound oil or irritation.
5. Deep / Cystic Blemishes (Nodular Acne)
What they feel like:
- Painful
- Under the skin
- Last longer
These are often linked to hormones and deeper inflammation.

They are not surface problems.
Which means they don’t respond well to surface aggression.
Here, barrier support is non-negotiable.
When your skin barrier is compromised, inflammation tends to linger longer and heal more slowly.
Again, this links back to the importance of understanding your barrier function — something I go into more deeply in my full skin barrier guide
The Real Problem: Overworked Skin
Most acne-prone skin isn’t dirty.
It’s:
- Over-cleansed
- Over-exfoliated
- Over-treated
- Over-corrected
When we constantly strip the skin, we weaken the very system designed to protect and regulate it.
And that’s when things spiral.

Instead of asking:
“How do I get rid of this?”
Try asking:
“How do I support my skin so it can regulate itself?”
Because when the barrier is supported:
- Oil production balances
- Inflammation reduces
- Healing improves
- Sensitivity calms
A Barrier-First Approach
At Naturally Bionic, everything comes back to one principle:
Repair > strip.
Calm > attack.
That doesn’t mean ignoring acne.
It means understanding it.
And treating it in a way that works with your skin — not against it.
If you’d like to understand your barrier in more depth, start here:

And if you’re simplifying your routine:

Support first. Correct second.
Your skin isn’t the enemy.
It’s trying to protect you.
